How an evening at the shop goes

Some nights we deal the Lotería cards, some nights we build totes, some afternoons we stitch something kind. Every one of them is a reason to come in and stay a while.

Our signature night: Lotería, the game everyone grew up with, played with books instead of beans. Themed rounds come and go — Beach Please for summer, Boots & Books for a little South Texas charm — each with prizes, blind books, snacks, and a room full of readers cheering each other on. Limited-edition event totes included.

Nora Roberts really does know how to tell a story. This one follows Arden, a newly published author whose book tour takes a frightening turn when one fan keeps showing up. That first section completely hooked me, tense and heartbreaking and hard to put down.

by Patrick Ness, from an idea by Siobhan Dowd

Beautifully written. Thirteen-year-old Conor is carrying fears no child should have to face, and every night a monster comes to visit. But it is not there to save anyone. It is there to help Conor face his own grief, and it wrecked me in the best way.

Annie sets out to solve her great-aunt Frances's murder with the help of Frances's decades-old journal. The dual timeline is so well done, and every chapter had me suspecting someone new. Just when I thought I had it figured out, I definitely didn't.
